After 5 years I am now reviewing this item. First, I can't believe I have already had this for 5 years and it is in perfect shape. I believe it to be very accurate having contrasted it with those taken at the doctor's. I am still using original batteries that it came with but I don't use the unit every day, but still, the Panasonic batteries that it comes with have not leaked in all that time. The unit even works on my kids even the great arm size difference. It really is a very well engineered item.

I bought a unit roughly 8-10 years ago (from Wal-Mart for about $60) and up to this date, the monitor still working very well. I have recommended this product to a lot of people/friends/patients due to it's slim design and accuracy with the readings. I bought a new one last month (from Amazon) for my mother. Unfortunately, after 3 days of usage, the unit quit working. First, I thought it must be the bad batteries (4 AA's) that came with the package so I tried to use 8 new fresh batteries to test but still can't get the machine to turn on. I called Amazon regarding the issue and they replaced the unit without any delay. The replacement arrived in just 2 days and was delivered even on a "Sunday"! I was really amazed with their customer service. The (new) replacement unit works perfectly without problems. Despite of the initial defective product issue, I still give this a 5-Star because I have used this product for many years and with proven durability and accuracy. It is sturdy, very portable with slim design and not bulky. If using the monitor for yourself and/or by yourself, the arm cuff is so easy to apply, no need to wrestle when tightening or loosening (unlike others).

I used for three months and it gave me my average from 75 recorded readings. One click simple to do. So then I take it with me to my doctors apt and compared it with their cuff. Darn if it was not spot on with them. 132/82 for me. The doctor was very impressed and wanted to know what make and model it was. Maybe I just got lucky but it is working out very well with me. I am still using the batteries that shipped with it.

And tonight I'm writing another review. I just changed THE ORIGINAL Panasonic batteries tonight. Buy this thing. It's quite accurate. I replaced original batteries with dollar alkaline batteries from Save A Lot. At this rate this could last another year.

In short, the Panasonic EW3109W upper arm blood pressure cuff is accurate, provides reproducible results, fast, comfortable, easy to use and inexpensive. It measures BP differently that any other device I have used. Other devices first inflate the cuff above the estimated systolic BP (the upper number) and THEN listen for sounds from the arterial blood vessels. If a sound is heard, it means that there is insufficient inflation of the cuff and the cuff pressure is further increased. Once the pressure is above the systolic BP the device slowly deflates the cuff while first listening for the blood to begin flowing (it makes a 'swishing' sound); this is the systolic BP. The pressure is further lowered until no sound is heard. This is the diastolic or bottom BP number. This takes time, excessive arm pressure and can be uncomfortable for may people. In contrast, the EW3109W listens to the arterial blood vessel sound while INFLATING the cuff. In this manner, the diastolic BP is heard first. The pressure continues to increase in the cuff until no sound is heard, indicating the systolic BP. Then the pressure in the cuff is rapidly lowered and the measurement is complete. Thus, only one inflation/deflation cycle is required and the inflation pressure is NEVER significantly above the systolic pressure. The measurement is fast since the pressure and blood vessel sounds only need to be measured once. The short cycle with cuff pressure never significantly in excess of your BP. This is what makes using the device comfortable. As a 'heart' patient, accuracy and repeatability are very important. As for the accuracy, I have tested the device against my own conventional/manual BP cuff. Further, I have taken the device to be compared to my physicians measurements. In both cases, there was a very close correlation. As for the repeatability, I typically take my BP 3 times over a 5 min. period. The measurements are always very similar. Like all automatic BP devices, the EW3109W is easy to use. Unlike other devices, the EW3109W is inexpensive! (FYI, I have been a medical device researcher and developer for over 30 years)

I've compared my readings with what I get at the doctor's office and they seem to be pretty comparable and consistent. The unit is reasonably convenient to use, although I will question some basic design concepts. I've been told that you get the most accurate reading from the RIGHT arm and that is the standard practice at the entire healthcare network I use (5 hospitals, and 30 practice offices). So, I'm surprised when I see the unit is designed to be most convenient for checking your left arm: the tube is attached to the left side of the unit, and the instructions are written on the cuff so that you can read them if you place it on your left arm. Despite that nuisance, it is still quite useable for checking your right arm, and it's not a bad idea to check both arms anyway (if there is a big difference it may be a sign you have circulatory problems, so check with your doc). The little carrying bag is nice, and I do pack it in a suitcase when I travel. Let it come up to room temperature before you use it, for accurate results. the 99 location memory is also nice (haven't filled it yet). It would be really cool if you could export that via USB or wireless, but, that's not a feature of this model (nor would I expect it at this price). Overall, I recommend it for convenient, quick, accurate readings.

I love it. Batteries last a long time, Consistent and fast readings, 1/2 the time of others. The reading are a close match to that of the docs office. This is the 3rd one I have purchased (one for my father, another one for my old work team so could monitor our cross fit health gains, and finally one for myself at home. I like the lack of complexity on this unit, instead of 100 extra keys for features no one needs. I have noticed the readings do get a bit kooky on occasion when the batteries should be replaced, even before the warning on the screen.

I have been using for 7+ years now the bulkier table model (EW3153) that I consider a very accurate blood pressure monitor (I take it to the doctor every other year during checkup and it routinely measures +/- 1 mm col Hg off the professional one). Taking the pressure readings during the inflation cycle is very comfortable. I bought this unit (EW3109W) for portability (house or travel) It has the same measurement logic, it gives essentially the same readings as the table unit on both arms. I use it with panasonic/eneloop AA rechargeable batteries instead of regular disposable alkaline.

SIX STARS!!!! This is, by far and away, the best, the most accurate, the easiest-to-use blood pressure monitor out there!! Why anyone would ever buy another kind, I'll never know. Last November, I was rushed by ambulance to the ER with a blood pressure that, by paramedics' measurement, was "high stroke level." After five days of "playing around" with all different blood pressure meds in the hospital, I finally was released with four-times-a-day pills and a promise to take my own blood pressure every four hours. Oh dear, how was I to do that without a monitor? So "my brother, the doctor" (yes, he's a real doctor!) and I looked through every monitor on the Amazon website (and there are a LOT!), and this Panasonic EW3109W Portable Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor is the one we decided upon. It had great reviews and great ratings and was within my price range. But, to be safe, we also chose a more expensive Omron monitor as well. Both arrived two short days later and, compared to my brother's "real doctor" cuff, this Panasonic was right on accurate! The Omron was not (and was returned). In addition, the preshaped cone cuff was easy for me to put on my upper arm and didn't hurt at all when expanded. In 28 seconds, it inflates to full capacity and back down again, measuring both cystolic and diastolic accurately. It stores the most recent 90 readings, and it blinks when either the cystolic or diastolic number is too high or too low. The size is only 8 inches in length, and it even comes with a handy dandy soft cloth carrying case. Just roll up the monitor inside the cuff, and they both fit easily into the case. I pack it whenever I travel, and it weighs almost nothing! I don't know all the proper technical terms and I won't go into the minute details (yes, that makes you happy, right??)...but I do know it works perfectly and easily for this old gal to take her own blood pressure!! Thankfully, it's only once a day now! Thank you, Panasonic, for the best blood pressure monitor ever!!!

I have been having borderline high blood pressure for years, and I felt it was high time that I checked my blood pressure more regularly than my yearly checkups. I wanted an inexpensive one, so I bought the Physio Logic Essential Blood Pressure Monitor (already reviewed), but I found that the cuff was too small for my upper arm and there was no way to adjust the length. So I sent it back and ordered the Veridian Wrist BP Monitor, which I didn't like because it really squeezed my wrist and was giving me some abnormally high and/or inconsistent readings. Also it used two AAA lithium ion batteries, and there was no option to plug in an adapter. I decided that my best bet would be to spend a little more and get a decent upper arm monitor that was portable and not too expensive. So I bought the Panasonic, and I love it. Always gives me consistent readings, the cuff fits my upper arm just right (a larger one is available, which I found I didn't need), and it is small enough to store near my desk so that I remember to take the readings. It is powered by four regular AA batteries, or it can also be plugged into a 6V AC adapter, which I like. All in all, a very good monitor, and in fact after using it for over a week, I have nothing negative to say about it. This is the one!
